The Charm

This month we explore the history of the Charm

The tradition of charm bracelets and necklaces date back to the
Neolithic Period. People would create charms out of animal bones, wood, and clay. Traditionally used just as accessories, as history progressed, cultures began to imbue these charms with special meanings used to grant good luck or ward off evil spirits.

Charm jewelry first rose to popularity in Ancient Egypt. Egyptian culture was not one to shy away from adornment, however, charm bracelets’ importance extended beyond just accessorizing. Pharaohs would wear specific charms to identify themselves in this life and the next. They believed that by identifying themselves to the gods that they would be granted a better place in the afterlife.

In Ancient Rome, the charm bracelet continued to provide not only personal identification, but it was used as a sign of your spiritual beliefs. Christians would wear a small fish charm to identify themselves to other Christians.

Charm bracelets in particular didn’t become fad until the reign of Queen Victoria. Before her influence, charms were normally worn by lower class citizens, on watch chains and chatelaines, adornments worn on women’s skirts and dresses. Historically, Queen Victoria wore a gold charm bracelet with a locket representing each one of her nine children, each enclosed with a lock of their hair. This began the sentimental tradition of charms. Many would gift each other charms to represent love and endearment.

Moving into the 1900s, charms became significant for soldiers and their spouses. In WWI, soldiers would wear the Fums Up design, depicting a cherubic child giving a thumbs up. Like knocking on wood, soldiers would rub this charm for good luck in times of hardship. During WWII, soldiers would bring home charms that represented each of the places they were stationed.
