The Tucson Gem Show

Agate carved into giant wings
This month's adventure: A trip to the Tucson Gem Show!
I recently had the opportunity to venture off to Arizona for the 71st annual Tucson Gem Show, one of the largest fairs of its kind - a literal treasure trove of precious rocks and minerals.

Slices of Watermelon Tourmaline
Held across two weeks in late January to early February, the gem show hosts vendors from around the globe and the US. Organized by the Tuscon Gem and Mineral Society, one can find all kinds of precious stones, beads, metals, fossils, and even meteor and asteroid fragments for sale. On my visit I encountered a variety of pieces that caught my attention, which I’m excited to share more about below.

After soaking in some of the Sonoran sun, my expedition begins visiting one of over 50 concurrent events taking place throughout the two weeks - The Pueblo Gem and Mineral Show. Here I was captivated by all kinds of quartz. One vendor’s display illuminated some quartz points from below, the crystals glowing like magic. I also came across some interesting “Green Gold” pieces which take on a lovely warm hue.

A visit to the Tucson Gem Show on 22nd street brought some more unconventional finds. Amidst the gems, sellers also exhibited historical artifacts. These bronze coins made their way to present day Arizona after being used by the ancient Kushan Empire of North India and Central Asia from 30-375 CE.

The Tucson show boosts the local economy attracting curious onlookers and experienced jewelers alike. Some of the best finds can be a little more exclusive, like what can be found at the Gem & Jewelry Exchange (GJX) Show, an event limited to qualified buyers of the trade.

Can you choose just one?

After a long day of rock hunting, the moon looms large in the night sky. I reflect on the scale of the gem industry in all its facets and the vast diversity of stones I’ve had the privilege to revel in for the past seven days. If you’re looking for a piece and have a specific stone in mind, I’d love to work with you to bring your vision to life.
